CAY Residence
Nantucket, Massachusetts
The CAY residence project was a complete renovation of an existing two–story traditional Nantucket shingle style house. The architectural intent for the renovation relied on maintaining the character of the outward expression of the style while transforming the interior into a modern, open living space. The challenge was to introduce structure framing creatively into the current wall, floor and roof cavities to transfer loads around existing structural elements that were to be demolished. Solutions included the introduction of story high gable trusses within the existing occupied attic space to allow for the removal of bearing walls below. The outcome was an incredibly open, modern interior wrapped in a very traditional Nantucket skin.
