Cylinder

Cylinder is a four-dimensional art installation by Leo Villareal Studio, displayed in the lobby of the Franklin Building in downtown Chicago. The suspended cylindrical volume contrasts with the rectilinear geometry of the lobby space and serves as a three-dimensional canvas for the artist. The installation becomes a visual experience of light and form by way of programmed linear strips of LED lights embedded within 30-foot-long mirrored stainless steel struts.

Hung from a mirrored, stainless steel-clad disk, the struts are radially arrayed and suspended 70 feet above the lobby floor. Supporting the disk is a structure comprised of an aluminum space truss suspended by hangers from the four corners of the oculus of the lobby ceiling above.

CRAFT worked closely with the artist and the metal fabricator, Argosy Designs, to realize the details of the installation. The resulting components, including the mirrored disk, met strict tolerance constraints to eliminate any distortions that might affect the visual performance.
