Murmurations is a suspended four-dimensional art installation that uses metal tubing to weave through an exterior courtyard overhang space located in Avocet Tower in Bethesda, Maryland. This sculpture contains a series of LED lights mounted onto curvilinear strands of metal tubing. The woven strands are hung from a series of vertical supports that cantilever from the structure of the building above. The resulting form is a three-dimensional creation on which the artist can add a programmable display of light.
The complexity of the form created an analytical challenge in understanding the actual nature of the wind interaction and its resulting reactions to the base building structure. Intricate analysis was necessary to resolve the localized effects of wind and seismic forces on the sculptureās individual components.
