The Water Mill Residence is a single-family home by Kligerman Architecture & Design located on the coast of Long Island. The form of the residence relies on an assembly of blade-like triangulated elements at roof lines, exterior walls, and chimney masses. The roof forms are dominant to the architectural language where the edge profile is minimized and accentuated by a continuous ribbon of windows below. The challenge for the structure in these locations is to establish proper load paths through elements that are purposefully minimized in their visual expression.
Located in a setting with complete exposure to the ocean creates tremendous opportunities for spaces and views but significant challenges for the structure. The design of the first-floor living space exemplified this as the interior is completely free of structure and flows into outdoor spaces through window walls and sliding openings.
The swimming pool for this residence, as is often the case with ocean front properties, exists below the Base Flood Elevation making it susceptible to the force of flood waters, wave impact, and buoyancy. The surrounding structure of the pool is therefore buttressed against these forces and acts completely independently from the structure of the residence.
