Modern Shingle Style

The design of this residence by Kligerman Architecture & Design draws from traditional forms while incorporating modern details that require non-traditional approaches to structure. The architect consistently incorporated the sleek, triangular volumes into the design, applying them to building elements throughout. Above the second-floor exterior deck, the plane of the roof steps into a low-pitched dormer projecting over a set-back perimeter wall of glazing. The design of the first-floor roof above the rear patio echoes the form and detailing of the upper roof though its structure differs fundamentally providing support by means of a thin steel colonnade set at the very edge of the roof profile.

Large interior spaces surrounded by window walls are a dominant element throughout the design. These spaces form a transition zone to the landscape by expanding interior single-story spaces and offering an uninterrupted visual connection to the outdoors.

Supported by a pair of fabricated metal box stringers, the stair appears to launch into a multi-story void and weave its way through the space to connect floors at multiple levels.

The stair tower’s double-height window wall is outlined by slender, triangular shapes that display detailed, asymmetrical proportions.

From the exterior, the double-height spaces develop their own language and representation of materials. Dark painted metal mullions and roof overhangs draw a connection to the expression of doors and windows throughout the design yet stand in contrast to the the surrounding building forms.

Images highlight the complex engineering solution and structural support these features demand. The twin chimneys rising above the roof plane stand stoically in the face of coastal winds, showcasing a delicate balance between design and durability.

The resulting structure is an interplay between embedded steel components and a traditional wood structure. Steel was employed in areas where wood framing would not have been sufficient. The hidden structure within the roof volume works to span the entire width of the opening within a shallow cross section while simultaneously cantilevering over the porch to its razor thin extent.
